I’ve been thinking for awhile about why I like playing certain games and not others. This article seems to quantify what I’m feeling (and give me a twinge of nostalgia of my life in Tokyo).

What I really have a problem with is the constant tutorials, and nagging that games seem to employ, when it’s really intuitive gameplay that makes PLAYING fun.

And that’s what I really want to do. Play.

David Seah is now quickly becoming my favorite way to waste time pretending to get more productive. In this one post though, he’s managed to find a solution to one of the problems still plaguing my friends and myself, whenever I invite an unknown into my digital circle of friends.

I hate chain letters because they’re thinly-disguised attempts to create something large on the backs of hundreds of strangers. There is, however, something magical about them; it’s interesting to think that a single person can send a letter to 10 people threatening them with misfortune…and be practically guaranteed that the chain will continue.

I got to thinking: If a chain letter can promise misfortune, what would be the most credible countermeasure? If people were making up their own chainletters, I figured that this gave me license to create my own magic certificate to draw on the power of like-minded people. And thus, the Chain Breaker was born. I call it the Certificate of Chain Letter Nullification.

Will it work? Probably not, but if nothing else, it’ll be fun to have, and hang on your wall.

I was exploring the internets today, specifically this bit. I remember seeing the tweets and the artcles on waxy and kottke but hey, the more information on an interesting topic the merrier. Then I inadvertently saw some comments on one of the blog posts. Was the bar for internet comments raised while I’ve been away at school or have I just been spending too much time on Youtube. I can’t pull up any specific comments as examples right now but I’ll say that I was impressed.

Gets me thinking about such things as social media and reaching the intended audience. How much individual personality needs to go into the writting to establish an image as a blogger? Can a person really create the same audience on Twitter? How would lowering the intended reading age of a news publication effect its audience? Would the spawn of /b/ and Youtube become a productive member of society?

Now my brain has gone off on so many tangents that I may never collect my thoughts in time to write my finals. Wish me luck.

I was aware of the Shazam-like app called Midomi but I was not aware that there was a website.

Of course I’ll use Shazam for on the fly identification of music but I usually want a bit more than that. Like covers or a similar sound. I haven’t fully explored the website yet but it appears to have everything I want. In fact I did hit the Explore button and was side-tracked listening to user recordings in Bengali.
